Mwathrika by Papermoon Puppet Theatre (C Venues 15-31 Aug 22:10) – this Indonesian troupe have apparently done for puppetry what Maus did for graphic novels.

The Biggest Marionette Circus in the World by Theatre Lalek (Momentum Venues @ St Stephens Aug 5-30 11:00am) life size marionette elephant, giraffe & lion – spectacular!

Cell by Smoking Apples and Dogfish (Underbelly, Cowgate Aug 6-30 16:35) A touching romantic adventure of a 3/4 full size puppet with MND

L’Enfant qui… I by TIJ (Institut Francais d’Ecosse Aug 7-29 18:30) Stunning physical theatre and puppetry in an atmospheric space about the internal world of an artist as child.

Tatterdemalion by Flabbergast Theatre (Aug 5-31 Assembly Roxy 17:45) it’s hard to work out if there’s any decent puppetry here but this is the Boris and Sergey people so fingers crossed

Bruce by The Last Great Hunt (Aug 6-30 Underbelly Cowgate 15:15) this Australian company brings a talking block of foam with eyes (and hands).

Citizen Puppet by Blind Summit (Aug 5-30 Pleasance Courtyard 17:00) the team that has been touring The Table around the world bring a ‘puppet docu-drama which tells the true story of Jack and the Beanstalk’ with an explicit language advisory

The Black Hoods Cabaret by Knuckle and Joint (theSpace @ Surgeons Hall Aug 7-22 22:10) Two puppeteers perform a crazy sketch show for adult audiences.

I am Beast by Sparkle and Dark (Aug 5-31 Pleasance Courtyard 15:20) The team behind the remarkable ‘Killing Roger’ tackle another dark subject with new writing, life-sized puppetry and live music.

Sing for your Life (Underbelly Cowgate Aug 6-30 20:40) real dead animals made into puppets do musical comedy. Not for the squeamish
